They fall into categories like physical (motor) development, language and communication, cognitive development, and social and emotional growth.<\/p>\n<h4>Milestones by Age<\/h4>\n<h3>By 2 Months<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Begins to smile at people<\/li>\n<li>Coos and makes gurgling sounds<\/li>\n<li>Follows things with eyes and recognizes people at a distance<\/li>\n<li>Holds head up and begins to push up when lying on tummy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>By 4 Months<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Smiles spontaneously, especially at people<\/li>\n<li>Babbles and mimics sounds<\/li>\n<li>Reaches for toys with one hand<\/li>\n<li>Rolls from tummy to back<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>By 6 Months<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Knows familiar faces and begins to recognize strangers<\/li>\n<li>Responds to own name<\/li>\n<li>Begins to sit without support<\/li>\n<li>Passes things from one hand to the other<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>By 9 Months<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>May be afraid of strangers<\/li>\n<li>Understands &#8220;no&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Makes a lot of different sounds like &#8220;mamama&#8221; and &#8220;bababa&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Stands, holding on<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>By 12 Months<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Cries when parents leave<\/li>\n<li>Says &#8220;mama&#8221; and &#8220;dada&#8221; and exclamations like &#8220;uh-oh!&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Tries to imitate words<\/li>\n<li>Pulls up to stand and may take a few steps<\/li>\n<li>Puts things in and out of containers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Encouraging Healthy Development at Home<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Talk and sing to your baby often<\/li>\n<li>Offer tummy time daily<\/li>\n<li>Read books together<\/li>\n<li>Respond to your baby&#8217;s sounds and gestures<\/li>\n<li>Provide safe toys that encourage exploration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Disclaimer: YouBelong Pediatrics shares educational content to support families.
